The Answers You Need
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS SPF AND WHAT DOES THE SPF NUMBER REPRESENT?
SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor.” SPF is a measure of the length of time that a sunscreen will protect you from ultraviolet rays. For example, if your bare skin would burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying an SPF 15 sunscreen would allow you to stay in the sun without burning for approximately 150 minutes (a factor of 15 times longer).
It’s important to note that no sunscreen blocks 100 percent of UVB rays, and ultrahigh SPFs are not much more protective than SPFs of 30. For example, when applied correctly, SPF 15 blocks 93 percent of UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks 97 percent. The increase in protection is gradual after that, 98 percent for SPF 50 and 99 percent for SPF 100.
There are two types of ultraviolet rays: UVB and UVA. Absent sun protection, UVB rays can damage the skin’s outer layers (also called the epidermis). The epidermis is where the most common forms of skin cancer occur. UVA rays are long enough to reach the skin’s inner layer (also called the dermal layer). Absent sun protection, UVA rays can damage collagen and elastic tissue which can lead to premature aging.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UVB is the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging (photo aging). UVA rays also exacerbate the carcinogenic effects of UVB rays, and increasingly are being seen as a cause of skin cancer on their own. SPF is a measure of how long a sunscreen will protect you from UVB rays. SPF does not measure protection from UVA rays.
There is currently no SPF equivalent measure for UVA protection. However, we do know that a broad spectrum sunscreen, like the New Heights Naturals’ products, will protect against both UVB and UVA rays.
Sunscreen should be just one of the sun protection strategies you use to protect your skin—you also need to cover up with clothing and a hat, seek the shade, and try to stay out of the sun during peak hours 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. And of course, always remember to reapply your sunscreen!
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHEMICAL AND MINERAL BASED SUNSCREENS?
Mineral (physical) sunscreens block and reflect UV rays. These include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Titanium dioxide protects against UVB rays, but not the full spectrum of UVA rays. Zinc oxide protects against the entire spectrum of UVB and UVA rays.
Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays. A chemical sunscreen label will include these ingredients: Octylcrylene, Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octisalate, Oxybenzone, Homosalate, Helioplex, 4-MBC, Mexoryl SX and XL, Tinosorb S and M, Uvinul T 150, Uvinul A Plus
Mineral (physical) sunscreens have a better safety profile (zinc oxide is the main component in diaper rash cream for infants) than chemical-based sunscreens and unlike chemical-based sunscreens, mineral-based sunscreens have not been found to cause free radicals. In addition, chemical-based sunscreens tend to be more irritating to the skin, and some generate free radicals which can cause skin damage, irritation, and aging.
HOW ARE TITANIUM DIOXIDE AND ZINC OXIDE DIFFERENT?
Titanium dioxide’s UV absorption spectrum is not as broad as zinc oxide. Zinc oxide better absorbs a greater spectrum of UVA and UVB wavelengths. Further, titanium dioxide creates free radicals that can damage to your skin cells, leading to premature aging.
Zinc oxide is the only sunscreen active ingredient that’s been tested and FDA approved for use on infants under six months of age and children, a vulnerable and sensitive demographic.
WHAT IS “NON-NANO” ZINC OXIDE?
Non-nano zinc oxide means that that the zinc particles are defined as greater than 100 nanometers in diameter (or 0.1 micron). Most nanoparticle sunscreens have particle sizes of 15 nanometers or 0.015 micron. Micronized sunscreens are created by grinding larger particle sizes into smaller ones. Typically micronized particles are between 0.1 micron and 100 microns, however the griding process may result in nanoparticles called ‘fines’ which are smaller.
There is some evidence that nanoparticle sized sunscreens can cross into the blood stream after topical application. New Heights Naturals’ products are non-nano, meaning the size of the zinc particles in our products are too large to cross into the blood stream. New Heights Naturals’ products do not contain nanoparticle zinc oxide or micronized zinc oxide.
The only way for you to know that a sunscreen active ingredient is non-nano is if the company provides you a particle size number. Zinc oxide in New Heights Naturals’ products are in the micron range (0.26 micron = 260nm) and are non-nano.
HOW ARE NEW HEIGHTS NATURALS’ PRODUCTS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SUNSCREEN PRODUCTS?
New Heights Naturals’ products contain only a single active ingredient: non-nano zinc oxide. Zinc oxide protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Zinc oxide is approved by the FDA for use in children under six months of age. Further, zinc oxide does not cause free radicals which can lead to skin damage, premature aging, and irritation.
ARE NEW HEIGHTS NATURALS PRODUCTS SAFE FOR INFANTS?
It is important to note that the general recommendation is to keep children under six months of age out of direct sun light rather than use sunscreen. This is because infants’ skin is so sensitive.
The active ingredient in our products is zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is approved by the FDA for use on infants younger than six months. Our inactive ingredients are similarly safe. The complete ingredients in each product are listed on the packaging and on this website. If you have any concerns, we encourage you to speak with your pediatrician.
Always remember to avoid direct sun exposure and seek the shade during the sun’s hours of greatest intensity, between 10 AM and 4 PM. Keep to the shady side of the street on walks, and use the sun shield on your stroller.
WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF NEW HEIGHTS NATURALS’ PRODUCTS?
The FDA requires sunscreen manufacturers to provide a two-year shelf life on sunscreen products. New Heights Naturals’ products comply with all FDA regulations, including shelf life requirements.
Note that unlike petrochemical sunscreens whose active ingredients degrade with time and exposure to the elements, the active ingredient in New Heights Naturals’ products, zinc oxide, never degrades. Unfortunately, that is not the case for the inactive ingredients in our products which will eventually oxidize and degrade. Consequently, we recommend replacing your New Heights Naturals products every two years.
ARE NEW HEIGHTS NATURALS’ PRODUCTS CRUELTY FREE?
Yes! We are Peta certified as cruelty free. We do not test on animals and neither do our manufacturers or raw ingredient suppliers.
ARE NEW HEIGHTS NATURALS’ PRODUCTS VEGAN?
